Obituary

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

September 22, 1952 - February 2, 2020

Stephen Powell, 65, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2020.

Stephen Powell, affectionately known as “Ste” or “Steve” was born in Atlanta, Georgia on September 22, 1952. He departed this life on February 2, 2020. He was the 4th of 5 Children. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Henry Powell, mother, Mrs. Lurie Powell, two of his other siblings, Mr. Robert Mitchell III and Ms. Terrell Ann Mitchell- Robinson.

Steve grew up in the Atlanta neighborhood known as “South Atlanta” and after attending a couple of its elementary schools, he graduated from Luther J. Price High School in 1970. After spending most of his life in Atlanta working at numerous jobs in manufacturing, landscaping, the construction industry and serving a brief stint in the Air Force Reserves Steve eventually moved to Charlotte, North Caroline in 1997. Shortly after arriving here, he was hired as a security guard. While at work one day, he met a lady named, Loretta Davis. It was love at first sight, because after a short courtship, they consummated their love by getting married on February 13, 1999. They were together for over 21 years.

Meanwhile, over the years, as his love for his caring and devoted wife grew, so did his love for the city of Charlotte and the security industry. This led to him attending several churches before he joined “Reconciling the World Ministries.” Steve and Loretta formed a lasting, spiritual relationship with its congregation.

Also, Steve performed so well on one of his security assignments at an upscale residential building that management asked him to become the building’s head of security. He worked at Ivey’s Townhomes for more than 17 years. However; illness took a toll and caused him to retire in 2016. Steve was an avid sports enthusiast and briefly played basketball while in high school. He and Loretta always seemed to have tickets to sporting events that would cause his brothers to ask, “You went Where?”, “You sat where ?”, “You did what?”. This was whether they were at a Charlotte Hornets, Bobcats, Panthers’ game, or traveling to a luxury cabin, beach house, or on a cruise.

Steve Powell will always be remembered for his good looks and endearing smile. Even when he was a little boy, his father gave him the nickname, “Handsome Harry”. He carried this persona his entire life. Yet, he carried it with a resilient work ethic, a resourceful zest for life, and an undying love for his family and friends. Steve leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife, Loretta Powell; 7 children, 2 biological children, Qiana Powell and Stephen (Smokey Joe) Powell Jr.; 5 children, Tameka Mosely, Larrica Mosely, Jeniska Davis, Kizzie Davis, and Nicole Cooper; 2 brothers, Lorenzo Powell and Gregory (Maxine) Powell; 1 aunt, Lucille Butler; 1 uncle, Roscoe Powell; 1 biological grandson, JaCorie Rhaney, 7 loving grandchildren, Breana Carter, Cameron (Roc) Ford, Brian (BJ) Moore, Aveion Johnson, Jocelyn Stinson, Amari Davis and Amyia Ried; 1 great grandchild, Skylar Carter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Also, of note were his special relationships with Rob O’Conner, Sabrina and Brian Conley, Dan & Linda Raiford, brother Joe, and the entire Reconciling the World Ministries family.
