James Davis Cunningham, 63, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2020.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4: 7-8
James Davis Cunningham transitioned to his heavenly home on June 25, 2020. James was born on October 29, 1956, to the late Louis and Hattie Lou Cunningham. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Lewis Cunningham and Joseph Marvin Cunningham, and an only nephew, Aaron Cunningham.
At an early age, under the guidance of his parents, James became a member of Mowing Glade A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte, N.C. He graduated from Independence High School in 1975 and attended Winston-Salem State University. Later in life, he worked for Florida Steel and Drum, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools System.
James was a loving father, grandfather, and friend who loved music and sports, especially basketball. James had a way with words that would make you laugh. A saying of his was ‘I treat everyone the way I want to be treated.”
He leaves to cherish his memories, four children – daughters, Justina Gooden (Lee) of Charlotte, NC, Tyra L. Cunningham of Concord, NC; two sons, Taurean L. Cunningham of Concord, NC and Tevon L. Cunningham of Charlotte, NC; and a stepdaughter, Lakisa Leake of Charlotte, NC. Also, five grandchildren, Christian Gooden, Alesha Gooden, Dominque Gooden, Ariyan Ford, and Alana Blanding, and one great-grandson, Jeshua Collins. An aunt, Ulene Cunningham Jordan of Charlotte, NC. In addition to the family, he leaves to cherish a special friend, Brenda Crowder. James had two longtime special friends, Jerry Robinson and Calvin Sturdivant, who affectionately called him ‘Preach’ a reminisce of the movie “Cooley High.”
James shared his life with a host of relatives and friends. He will be missed but not forgotten. In lieu of flowers, you may make contributions in memory of James D. Cunningham to Mowing Glade A.M.E.
