Obituary

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

April 23, 1947 - August 27, 2020

Brenda Sloan Harris, 73, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2020.

Mrs. Brenda Joyce Sloan Harris was born April 23, 1947 in Charlotte NC to the late Oland E. Henderson and Mary Ruth Sloan Henderson.

August 27, 2020 at Atrium Health Mercy Hospital, Brenda transitioned into her heavenly sleep joining her loved one’s daughter Linda Shanetta Harris, son Andre Donnell Harris, brother Walter Louis Sloan Sr, sister’s Delores Sanders and Sylvia Kaye Sloan.

Brenda accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a young age. A faithful member of New St. John Baptist Church singing on the Gospel Choir. She attended service until years later her health wouldn’t allow her.

Brenda received her formal education from the colored schools through the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System graduating in 1964 from J.H. Gunn School. Now, how many can say their school was named for a big band? Well, J.H. Gunn Elementary, located in east Charlotte, was named for the 1930s big band called the Jimmie Gunn Orchestra.

Brenda's years of employment was a ministry providing a need to others. Being a Charlotte Mecklenburg County School Bus Driver was a big responsibility daily getting children to and from school safe. While also working as a librarian at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library-North located on Beatties Ford Road at LaSalle St, for many years continually working with children. She had a stern, but loving way about herself, and it goes without saying all those children respected her for her mere presence. She wasn’t finished yet, before retiring she took on being a Healthcare Worker, taking care of the elderly which she truly enjoyed. It can surely be said that she cared for the young to the older, and some cases the young again.

Survived by her loving daughter, Tonja Michelle Sloan, granddaughter, Shemekia Shanetta Sloan, brother Dwight Patterson, beloved niece-daughter Nicole R. Sloan-McCree (Tedarrian Sr.), special grandchildren, sister in law Mary "Cookie" Sloan, all of Charlotte NC.  A host of nephews, nieces, and many friends
