Walter Smith, Jr.

March 4, 1945 ~ September 1, 2019 (age 74)

GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA

March 4, 1945 - September 1, 2019

Walter Smith, Jr., 74, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2019.

Walter Smith Jr., affectionately known as “Tweet,” was born to the late Viola Davis Smith and Walter Smith Sr. on March 4, 1945, in Blair, SC. Walter transitioned from this earthly home on September 1, 2019. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Dr. Roy Smith, Norman Smith, James Smith and Marion Smith, sisters Barbara Smith and Bertha Smith, and grandson Anthony Houston, Jr.

Walter attended Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Schools and graduated from Teamer High School. On October 9, 1966, Walter joined the Christian fellowship at Smallwood Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC.  He was a dedicated employee of Radiator Specialty Inc. for over 23 years. After leaving Radiator Specialty, he stayed active by working for Parts Depot until his health began to decline.  In July 2016, he relocated to Greensboro, NC so that his daughter Wanda and her family could oversee his care.

Walter was a compassionate and loving father, but his stern voice would quickly warn you when he did not agree with your actions. He often shared his belief that he wanted his daughters to have more than he did and wanted his grandchildren to have more than their parents, and he encouraged us with actions and words to make this dream come true. He adored his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them and supporting them with academic and extracurricular goals. He often expressed his views on the importance of good credit and investing in yourself first by participating in a company’s 401K plan. Walter strongly believed in the importance of family and supporting relatives and friends during their times of need.  With a laid back but warm personality, he enjoyed meeting new people and loved his cars and styling in suits and hats. He was also an avid fan of golf, football, and basketball.

Walter leaves to cherish his memory daughter, Wanda (Anthony) Boyd of Greensboro, NC; daughter, Karen (Anthony) Houston of Charlotte; sister, France Ivey of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Gabrielle Boyd of Charlotte, NC, Jarrett Boyd of Greensboro, NC, and Antonio Houston, of Salisbury, NC; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. He also had two lifelong devoted friends, Ms. Joan Simpson (mother of Wanda and Karen) and Ms. Leola Harris.
