Walker Rawlings, Jr.

December 4, 1942 ~ May 8, 2018 (age 75)

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

December 4, 1942 - May 8, 2018

On December 4, 1942, in Wayne County, North Carolina, a King was born.  This King we called Walker Rawlings, Jr., affectionately known as “Walker, Jr.”, “Pops”, and “Papa.”  Walker, Jr. was born to the late Walker Rawlings, Sr., and Ossie Vicker Rawlings.

Walker, Jr. was educated in the North Carolina Public School System where he graduated top of his class.  In 1962, Walker entered into the army and served this country as one of the elite soldiers in his unit.  Determined to learn and always   willing to go the extra mile, Walker, Jr. took on numerous trades such as painting, carpentry, landscaping, etc. But the one he loved the most was demolition.  Walker became the top supervisor of his sites so they reluctantly named him the foreman supervisor in January 1990.

After years of courting, Walker Rawlings, Jr. finally married the love of his life, Helen Lee Rawlings.  With this union and to his surprise, he open heartedly, willingly and affectionately took on a huge family.

Walker loved gospel music, cookouts with whole hogs on the grill,  special times with family, graduations, and proms. Papa had a special love for his grandkids and he loved and cherished the long talks with his son and best friend Antonio Williams, and his spoiled rotten baby girl, Fredericka Lyles.  Walker, Jr., Dad, Papa, loved football too, with the Redskins being his dream team.  He had a playful spirit loved, joking, and making us, his family laugh.  Papa’s ability to laugh and make us smile, even in dark moments, was his trademark.  You couldn’t help, but to smile around Pops because his smile was contagious.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and Devoted Wife, Helen Rawlings; Two Sons, Antonio Williams  and Dennis Archible; Three Daughters, Fredericka Lyles (son-in-law & caretaker Robert Lyles, Sr.), Keisha Smith and Asanti Williams; his Fantastic Six Grandchildren, Reginald Wagoner, Rokeya Marbury, Deville Wagoner, Robert Lyles, Jr., Malachi Lyles & Francis Lyles (Gorgeous); Nine other Grandchildren; Eighteen Great-Grandchildren; Two Sisters, Barbara Witherspoon and Sarah Marie Brown; One Brother, Robert Rawlings; a host of  nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Walker Rawlings, Jr. will be held at Boston's Mortuary, 4300 Statesville Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28269, on Monday, May 14, 2018.  Family visitation will begin at 12:00PM and the funeral service will begin at 1:00PM.  Interment will be held at Salisbury National Cemetery 501 Statesville Boulevard Salisbury, NC 28144, on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 9:00AM.
