Robert Puryear, 68, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018 while holding his wife Jean's hand.  

Robert Thomas Puryear, Sr., was born on July 26, 1949, to the union of Robert and Blanche Puryear in Long Branch, New Jersey.  Robert received his formal education at Long Branch High School.

Robert Thomas Puryear Sr. was a well-known athlete in his hometown of Long Branch.. He excelled in multiple sports including track and field, football and basketball.  He attended Monmouth College on a partial track and basketball scholarship.  He later gave back by coaching, mentoring and eventually serving as a truancy officer for Long Branch Middle School.

He grew up a big brother and father-figure to seven siblings.  On August 22, 1970, Robert married his first wife, Shirlene Blount, and they were blessed with four children. He devoted most of his spare time enjoying outings such as bicycling, hiking and fishing with his beloved family. He also enjoyed bodybuilding and even published a popular local wrestling newsletter.

Robert also served as a deacon at Mt. Olivet 7th Day Adventist church in Asbury Park, New Jersey. In his later years, he married Jean Simmons on December 31, 2003.  With this union, the Puryear Family grew from a family of five to a family of ten. Later, Robert moved his family to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he worked as a Lieutenant for Budd Group Security. After retirement, he enjoyed scrapping for salvage as a lucrative hobby. Robert was well-loved by family and friends and a highly-respected member of the community. He touched the lives of many around him. His unconditional love, his keen sense of humor, his immense wisdom and his ever-growing legacy shall echo an eternity. 

Robert Thomas Puryear, Sr. departed this life on April 7, 2018.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Alfred Puryear.  He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 18 years , Jean Simmons; children, Nicole Williams, Michelle Puryear Suydam, Alicia Puryear, Shirlene Muhammad, Robert Puryear, Jr., Aleeyah Puryear, Aneesah Hall, Kadejah Simmons, Joleesah Simmons, and Robert Jeffcoat; 13 Grandchildren; Sisters, Constance Smith, Linda Puryear, April Anderson, and Adrienne Anderson; Brothers, Chris Puryear, and Gregory Puryear; and a host of other family and friends. 

The Puryear Family have entrusted arrangements to Boston's Mortuary.
