CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

June 20, 1954 - May 30, 2018

Steven Somerville was born on June 20, 1954 in Warren County, North Carolina and departed his life peacefully on May 30, 2018 at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina.   He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Kalford Burton and Kathleen Burchette Somerville.

Steven grew up in Manson, North Carolina and was educated in the Warren County Public School System, graduating from Norlina High School in June, 1972.  He attended Winston Salem State University in Winston Salem, North Carolina and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Intermediate Education in May, 1976.  His entire career was in the insurance and investment industry.  Initially, he was employed with Allstate Insurance Company and later became self-employed as an independent insurance and investment representative with Millennium Financial Group for 28 years until his death.

His family often joked that he would never get married but God had a different plan.  At the tender age of 33, Steven married the love of his life, the former Varnell McCrorey in August, 1988. This was a match that was “made in heaven” and to this union, God blessed them with two wonderful children – a son, Micah, and a daughter, Samaria

Steven loved the Lord. He was baptized at an early age at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ.  At the age of 25, he began a firm commitment and walk with the Lord.  He was passionate about serving God, witnessing salvation through Jesus Christ, and helping those that are in need, particularly the poor.  In March 2003, Steven and Varnell began Injoy Ministries where he was the Senior Pastor.  By God's blessing and favor, the ministry has been an expression of JOY and light to the neighborhood, community, and world through their love, giving and evangelism. To God’s glory and praise, a new church building was completed and dedicated on June 10, 2017.

In addition to his parents, Steven was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Morrison and Sandra Somerville; and seven brothers, Odell, Ronald, Lawrence, Edward, Walter, Kalford Jr., and Elvert.

Those left to cherish precious memories of Steven include his devoted wife of 30 years whom he adored, Varnell, and his children, Micah and Samaria.  He is also survived by siblings, Larry H. Somerville (Jeanette) of North Potomac, MD, and Effie Adams (Nate) of Manson, NC; his Mother-In-Law, Mrs. Dorothy McCrorey of Great Falls, SC, Sister-in-Law, Bevelyn Hicks (Claude) of Rock Hill, SC, and three Brother-in-Laws, Calvin McCrorey of Great Falls, SC, Varnon McCrorey (Carol) of Indian Land, SC, and Harvey McCrorey (Carla) of Rock Hill, SC as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

“Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your Strength.”  Neh 8:10
