Marie Yvonne Montgomery, 72, passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2018.

Marie Montgomery was born on April 15, 1946, to the late Neil Legette and Thelma Benton. She was born and raised in Greensboro, NC; however she later made Charlotte, NC, her home. Marie knew and loved the Lord. She confessed Christ at an early age and remained faithful until her dying day. Marie graduated from Dudley High School and later enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University where she was an outstanding cheerleader and displayed her “Aggie Pride”. Marie was an active member of the Eastern Stars where she was elected Queen of Sheba twice. She was also inducted as a member of CHUM’s.

Marie was a mother to many, often giving advice and support whenever needed. She helped raise many children along with her own. Marie was such an enduring person who was known for her humor, spunk, and straightforwardness. She was always extending a helping hand and opening her home to those in need. She loved her children wholeheartedly and instilled God, faith, and family in them. 

Marie retired from the restaurant industry after more than 30 years of service. Her skills in the kitchen were unmatched. She will be remembered by many for her seafood pasta salad, mouth-watering macaroni and cheese and irresistible pumpkin cheesecake. Marie enjoyed her retirement by traveling and bowling. Marie was an avid bowler, as well as a loyal, faithful and devoted team member. She will also be remembered for her love of sports. A true sports fanatic, Marie enjoyed all sports but especially football and basketball. Her love for the Carolina Panthers was unparalleled.  

Marie passed away on Sunday, November 4th surrounded by family. She leaves to cherish her wonderful spirit her daughters, Angela (Kenny) Lanier, Maria (Benjamin) Black, both of Charlotte, NC, and Carol (Anthony) Worley, of Clinton, NC; sons, Clarence Montgomery and Raphael Montgomery both of Charlotte, NC; sisters, Gwendolyn Benton Stewart and Robin Benton Hines of Greensboro, NC; brothers, Joseph Benton of Atlanta, GA and Kevin Benton of Greensboro, NC; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

She also leaves to cherish her memory Lester Lanier. Lester was a lifelong partner, best friend and confidant for over 30 years. Their love was unconditional. They enjoyed attending West Charlotte football games. Marie received an honorary membership from West Charlotte’s Class of 1966. Lester and Marie also enjoyed dances and other auxiliary functions. More than anything, they enjoyed traveling together. 

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Neil Legette and Thelma Benton; loving husband, Clarence John Montgomery; brothers Donald Wade, James Benton, Timothy Benton, Jerry Benton, Tony Comer, and sister Ann Wade.

Marie was the epitome of a mother and will be dearly missed by those who came to know her.

A public viewing for Ms. Montgomery will be held on Friday, November 9, 2018, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, at Boston’s Mortuary 4300 Statesville Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28269. 

The funeral service for Ms. Montgomery will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at Reeder Memorial Baptist Church, 3725 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28216. The visitation will begin at 12:30 PM and the funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM. Interment immediately following service at Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens 11201 Beatties Ford Road Huntersville, North Carolina 28078 .

The Montgomery Family have entrusted her care to Boston's Mortuary.
