CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA.
September 23, 1949- November 27, 2019.
Darnell Cooper, 70, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2019.
On Wednesday, November 27th, at Novant Hospital in Huntersville NC, our beloved Wife, Sister, Daughter-in-Law, Sister-in-Law, Aunt, Cousin, and Friend lost her battle with cancer. Darnell, daughter of the late Jean Elizabeth Copper Tucker and Philip Cooper was born September 23, 1949, in Baltimore City, Maryland.
Darnell attended Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School. She later graduated from Morgan State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She then went on to pursue and receive her Master’s Degree in Education from Towson State University.
Darnell elected to work for the Baltimore City Public School system as a way of giving back to her community. Darnell worked at MAWES - Mary Ann Winterling Elementary School (formerly Bentalou Elementary) as a Computer Technology Specialist. She was not only a teacher, but served as the right hand of the then principal Mary Ann Winterling, for whom the school was later named. In addition, she was a mentor and friend to many of the teachers and staff, as well as a parent to the children she loved to teach. Darnell was adored by both students and teachers and was lovely referred to as “Coop” by her peers. She served MAWES for 41 years before retiring on June 30, 2016. Darnell also served her Country as a Drill Sergeant in the United States Army Reserves for 4 years.
After retirement Darnell relocated to Charlotte NC, with her wife Jackie Morris, and two dogs Jada and Titus. They were blessed to have shared 27 amazing years together. Darnell loved Charlotte and considered it her second home.
Darnell was a loving, caring, generous person, and would give you the shirt off her back. She always took time to listen and provide guidance when asked, and volunteered it if she thought it necessary (smile). She was a gentle soul who had the patience of Job. Darnell made the world a much better place just by being in it. Some of her favorite things to do included spending time with friends and family, shopping, eating out, and traveling. One of her favorite pastimes was watching old westerns on TV. She was also fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel extensively, i.e. most of the Caribbean Islands, Germany, Paris, Barcelona, Greece, Turkey, Alaska, Rome, Venice, and Florence, to name a few. She truly lived a full and beautiful life.
Darnell leaves to continue her legacy of love, her devoted wife Jackie Morris; her sister Barbara Cooper; her brother Jackie Cooper; her mother-in-law Betty Morris; her sister-in-law Renee Saunders; nieces Lisa Montgomery, Kiah Stokes, Felicia Williams, Jalisa Montgomery, Kia Montgomery, Ariana Montgomery, Alexandria Saunders, and Autumn Saunders, Nephews Mack Williams, Sam Montgomery, Armin Hoes, Anthony Claytor, Adrian Morris; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
The Cooper Family have entrusted arrangements to Boston's Mortuary.
