ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA
May 3, 1921 - March 6, 2018
Barbara Olive (Betzig) White passed away peacefully on March 6, 2018. She was born in New York City on May 3, 1921, in a beautiful Washington Heights brownstone, to Evelyne Marie (O’Callaghan) and William Bernard Betzig. Barbara is predeceased by her parents and siblings--Evelyne, Jean, William and John—her husband, Robert, and her daughter, Kathleen.
Barbara grew up in Larchmont, NY, where she was active in her church, schools, and Orienta Beach Club, where she spent her youth making memories and winning trophies. She graduated from St. Gabriel’s High School, the College of New Rochelle, and attended Columbia Graduate School. Her major was in Child Psychology, of which her children and grandchildren were constantly reminded.
Barbara married Robert White in 1946 and moved to Middletown, OH, where they raised five children—Robert White Jr. (Shirley Fondu), Jon Christopher White (Christine Marshall), Barbara Stynes (Daniel), Jeanmarie White (Brian Beihl), and Kathleen Wood (Ronald). During her years in Middletown, Barbara was a Girl Scout Leader and a Den Mother. She participated in bowling and golf leagues, garden and bridge clubs, and volunteered in many school and charity organizations. She and her husband were founding members of St. Mary Parish and early boosters of Fenwick High School.
After Bob’s passing in 2002, Barbara moved to Antrim, NH. In Antrim she found a welcoming community and made many new friends. Barbara enjoyed birdwatching, reading, outings at the Antrim Yacht Club, rooting for her Cincinnati Reds and Bengals, and numerous cross-country family visits. In addition to her children and their spouses, she leaves a wealth of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Barbara loved children and dogs (not so much cats). She was a fierce advocate for her family, and doing the right thing. She always said that in this world “there are the ones who watch and the ones who do.” She was a doer.
The family will hold a private memorial service in the spring. Donations in her memory may be made to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
The White Family have entrusted arrangements to Boston's Mortuary.
